The new trend: small ships
We believed that the increase in size of pleasure craft had reached its peak when we saw an increasingly greater number of 30 metre vessels from international ports. That was more or less the top limit not so much of the desires of dollar and euro millionaires as of superyacht production capacity, yachts that could be built in the old existing shipyard structures. In Italy there was a race to buy old merchant vessel shipyards which were largely in disuse, but precisely this increased demand hiked the prices up to levels that many consider disproportionate. 30 metre yachts are no longer enough. And in fact today the many Scrooge McDucks referred to in Tommaso Nastasi's survey, published in this number of Superyacht, seek 50, 100 and 150 metre vessels. And who builds most of them? Among the most accredited, with more than 50 units of this type, which should be launched only in the new Leghorn yard, is the Azimut/Benetti Group. Paolo Vitelli, as demonstrated by premises in Avigliana, Viareggio, Fano, Leghorn and some other potential acquisitions around the world, has been farsighted. But we must also ask ourselves about the effects of the agreement reached by the President almost a year ago with Fincantieri: when will the first Benetti/Fincantieri pleasure supership be announced? Not only sizes increase but also typologies. Because it is hard to think of planing hulls for pleasure craft of such dimensions and displacement which are actually ships. So the programmes of many shipyards - San Lorenzo, CNL, Aicon etc - are setting the small ship "fashion", semi-displacement and displacement, for serener sailing. This phenomenon however does not regard only European builders, since the emerging countries too are about to offer new displacement models in this sector, as we read in Corradino Corbò's reportage on shipyards in far off Taiwan. At the same time there is an ever greater need of international standards for these super vessels on which, clearly, safety assumes an increasingly important role precisely due to the value of the object.
